Kansas is understandably getting a lot of respect from bookmakers entering the 2022-23 season. Since 2006, only Kansas (9), Iowa State (4), Missouri (2), and Texas (1) have won the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament. Conversely, Texas has failed to win in any of its six championship game appearances. Oklahoma has won three of its five championship games while Missouri has won two of their four. Iowa State is 5-0 in their five championship games including their upset win over Kansas in 2019. Kansas has been the conference’s dominant force with 12 Big 12 tournament wins in 15 appearances. The tournament winner earns a berth in the annual NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball tournament. Of the ten teams in the conference, the top six earn a first-round bye leaving the bottom four to play for the last two seeds. The tournament is a single-elimination tournament lasting four rounds. The Big 12 was formed in 1996 and its teams have participated in the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament since 1997. In the national landscape, Kansas (6), Baylor (7), and Texas (9) are all in sportsbook’s top-10 to win the National Championship. The bottom five teams are quite bad, but they will still cause some problems on their home court. Texas Tech and TCU also have high preseason expectations, the highest in TCU history, as they are both under 10/1 and would not shock anyone to win the Big 12. Texas, a team with high expectations in all sports, is the third head in this three-horse race. Oddsmakers have Kansas, the defending national champions, as slight favorites, but Baylor, the champions from two seasons ago, are right on their tail. The Big 12 is going to be fun this season as the conference is loaded with talent. Take the Jayhawks at even money to take the regular season conference title. The other two teams must be perfect, which is a wholly unlikely outcome. This leaves margin for error for them in the more difficult games down the stretch while still being able to win the conference if that error comes. In the conference that remains an absolute gauntlet, Kansas has faced the fire in the more difficult matchups already. Kansas has just one additional matchup with a ranked opponent, while the other two teams have an additional two. The following statements are exclusive of the three competing teams matchups with each other. Kansas is the best road team of this group and they additionally have the softest schedule down the stretch. The oddsmakers have the correct favorite, but they do not have the price high enough on Kansas, where this is value to attack. We are currently looking at the Jayhawks as the roughly even money favorites, with Baylor checking in around +200 and Texas sitting north of +300. It is difficult to remember another time conference champion odds were so tight this late in the season, with all three teams being realistic national championship contenders as well. Adding to the dramatics, each team has a home game and an away game when playing the other two teams they are currently tied with. What’s more, each team still has a date with the other two remaining on their schedule. They are in a three way tie at the top of the conference. The preseason favorites in the conference were Kansas, Baylor and Texas, and that remains the case.Īll three teams are ranked top 10 in the country, and these teams are as tight as they could possibly be in the conference standings as well. The Big 12 is the conference in which preseason projections, prognostications and odds were most correct.
